Smart Wheelchair Component System

Current Projects:

Many people are unable to safely and independently operate wheelchairs due to limitations in vision, fine motor control, cognitive skills, or simply limited experience. To increase access to independent mobility, AT Sciences is developing a range of mobility devices with navigation assistance features. The Smart Wheelchair Component System consists of a network of sensor modules which can be mounted on a power wheelchair and automatically stop the wheelchair if it is driving toward an obstacle. The Smart Power-Assist Module provides similar capabilities on a manual wheelchair frame. Both of these systems are directed toward people who can, for the most part, control their wheelchairs; but might have occaisonal difficulty controlling the chair or seeing obstacles. The Semi-Autonomous Wheeled Mobility System is directed toward people who are currently dependent on an attendant for mobility, and will allow multiple wheelchairs to follow a single attendant or follow a known path; with a goal of increasing social and therapeutic opportunities for clients while accomodating staffing limitations.
